Every Tuesday is StoryTime at 5 Rivers. Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stop by for a free reading of a nature based story followed by arts and crafts. Today's story is "A Frog in the Bog" by Karma Wilson
January 27: 1pm-2pm; Growing Up Wild: The Skeleton Inside You
Afternoons will never be the same as we help our preschoolers grow up wild and learn all about nature! The program is free, and registration is required since space is limited. This week we find out all about leaves. To save your spot, give us a call at 251-625-0814.
January 28: 1pm-2pm; 5 Rivers Saturday Class: Venom or No? What’s That Snake?!
Adults and children are both welcome as we discover the difference between a venomous and a nonvenomous snake and how to identify a snake. The talk is free and everyone is welcome to join us. Join us every Sunday for a free family-friendly film. Today is "Moment of Impact – Jungle"
The jungle’s layers are peeled back to dissect more amazing moments of impact. Stealth and ambush reign in the jungle and survival depends on highly tuned senses and ingenious defenses. From ninja ants to flying snakes, cameras dive underwater, sail through trees and penetrate fur, feathers, skin and bone to reveal the science of some amazing animal engineering hidden deep in the jungle

February 3: 1p-2pm; Growing Up Wild: Topic "Skullology"
Afternoons will never be the same as we help our preschoolers start discovering the nature that is found all around them. This class will look at the different characteristics of skulls, and compare skulls of different types of creatures to see how they are alike and how they are different. February 5: 2pm-3pm; 5 Rivers Sunday Matinee
Join us every Sunday afternoon and take in a free, family-friendly film. Today's film is "The Loneliest Animals"
The loneliest animals are the most endangered species on the planet. Collected and protected by dedicated scientists, these animals represent the end of the line for their species. In many cases, intensive captive breeding programs have been launched with the aim of sustaining these animals and the hope of returning them to the wild. Viewers will be taken into high-security, high-tech labs where scientists attempt to breed new generations, and into the field to discover what forces have led to the demise of entire species. Featured animals include Yangtze turtles under 24-hour surveillance; a baby Sumatran rhino; a special collection of lemurs; the Spix’s macaw, a bird declared extinct in the wild in 2000; and “Lonesome George,” a giant tortoise from the Galapagos, who is the last of his kind.

The Mobile Bay Sierra Club will feature a program with discussion by Ben Raines, who has received many awards for his 'Distinguished Environmental Journalism'.
Ben has served as the Mobile Press Register's environment reporter since 2000. He continues to uncover critical issues in Mobile and Baldwin Counties as well as the state of Alabama and the Gulf of Mexico.
Since April 2010 his ongoing investigative reporting regarding all environmental aspects of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster has gotten the attention of the people in charge all the way to the White House and the world. Ben's passionate interest and knowledge of the natural resources of our Gulf Coast region is evident in every article he publishes. Ben Raines and the Mobile Press Register have brought attention to many important environmental issues affecting the Gulf of Mexico and the people who work and recreate in it.
Refreshments will be served at 6:40 p.m.

From frogfish and hagfish to naked mole rats and elephant seals, we learn how and why ugly can be beautiful, even when it isn’t pretty

February 25: 10am-3pm; Val Webb’s Nature Drawing Workshop: Winter’s Tale in Pen and Ink
The stories of spring lie hidden just beneath the surface as winter draws to a close along the Gulf Coast. There is a simple beauty in bare branches, seed pods, tiny emerging buds and the first insects to venture forth as the seasons turn back toward warmer days. Spend a Saturday in one of Alabama's most beautiful waterfront settings, learning to use traditional drawing techniques to create elegant and accurate drawings of winter nature subjects in pen-and-ink. No experience necessary! All art supplies provided. This event helps support wildlife education programs at 5 Rivers. Cost is $60 per person. To register, contact Val Webb at studio@valwebb.com.

According to legend, Spanish explorers believed that a fountain of eternal youth existed somewhere in the place we know today as Florida. In a poetic way, they were right. Beneath Florida lies the world’s largest known system of springs. These springs shelter strange life forms and dot the land above it with outlets of water that once was as pure as any found on this planet.

Today’s film is “Nova: Dogs Decoded”. - Man's best friend has much to tell us about ourselves, as witnessed by this "Nova" episode that highlights recent scientific revelations about the genetic makeup of dogs, and the implications of those revelations for humans. The program also examines the bond between man and dog, and demonstrates how in the safety of human-controlled spaces, dogs have evolved into a staggering array of canine creatures.

Writer-director Paul Wagner's thoughtful documentary details the history of Irish immigration to America using archival and contemporary film footage, readings from correspondence and expert analysis to convey the flavor and progression of events. Included are insightful discussions of the potato famine, Irish folk traditions, Catholicism and the deprivation and political oppression that led millions to abandon their homeland for a better life.

Today’s film is “National Geographic: Explorer: 25 years” Celebrate "Explorer's" 25 years of compelling programming with this commemorative special that recaps such show highlights as an undersea expedition to the Titanic wreckage, a tour of the Guantanamo Bay detention center and a report from North Korea.
